First of all, congratulations on your registration!!! You are in for the experience of a lifetime. You will soon be amongst a group of elite Americans who have attended Boys States throughout the country. Here are some common questions which arrise after the registration process. 1. How do I find out details about bus transportation?

Each individual American Legion Post, or in some cases, a group of posts, get together to arrange the bus transportation to and from EIU. Contact your local legion post for further transportation information. If you find that unsuccessful, email the webmaster.

2. What should I bring to Boys State?

You should receive Citizen Information from the state office in Bloomington. Click here to view a copy. You will find a list of necessities here.

3. Where do I go when I arrive?

Boys State Headquarters is located in the lobby of Andrews Hall on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. From there, you will proceed through the registration line and be given your dorm assignment. Click here to view a map of EIU. It should be noted that due to construction, Seventh Street is permanently closed. You will have to take Fourth Street to Roosevelt Avenue and turn left.

4. Should I make my campaign posters and such at home and bring them?

Absolutely not. Boys State rules prohibit the creation of campaign materials before the session begins. You will also be limited in your spending for each campaign. See the Boys State Statute to Regulate Campaign Finances.

5. When does the program end?

The program will end with the Final Awards Assembly on Friday morning. You will be dismissed from there at about 11:30 AM. Since ALL busses will be present, it is vital that you listen carefully for returning bus instructions when you arrive. Optional sack lunches will be provided.

6. When is the first meal?

The first meal is at 6:00 pm on Saturday. You should plan your stomach accordingly.

8. What sports are offered during the week?

Boys Staters have full access to the EIU Student Recreation Center (SRC). Team competitions will take place in organized basketball, flag football, soccer, 16" slow pitch softball, and volleyball. Further information can be found by clicking here.

9. Can I leave campus during the week?

No. With over 700 students participating in the program, off campus travel is limited to pre-arranged events and emergencies only.

10. What do I need to do if I have to leave early?

In general, we discourage Boys Staters from leaving the program early. The program peaks on Thursday and Friday with the announcements of scholarship winners and state constitutional officers. If, however, you must leave early, arrangements must be made PRIOR to the start of the program. Please email the webmaster if you register and have to leave early.

11. What time to I have to arrive on Saturday?

The formal registration line closes at 5:00 pm to prepare the cafeteria for dinner. If you need to arrive later than that, please notify the webmaster ahead of time and we will make arrangements for you.

12. How much money should I bring?

The registration fee includes your participation, housing, and three meals each day. 'Late night pizzas' are quite common, and you may wish to purchase a souvenir at the bookstore. As a Boys Stater, you will also be eligible to join the Boys State Alumni Association which has a $10 fee. Campaign expenses at each level are limited as well to a maximum of $20 per campaign per individual. Campaign fundraising may be done as well. There are three major levels of election: city, county, and state. Outside of the above, there are really no incurred expenses. Note: Boys State provides a no interest bank for the safekeeping of the money you bring. All citizens are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to deposit most of their money in the Boys State bank for security reasons. The bank is open for every meal in the cafeteria throughout the week.

13. I'm coming to Boys State with my friends. Will we be able to room together?

No. One of the major benefits of the program is the opportunity to meet new people and learn about the diversity of our state. The room assignments are based on random computer housing assignments.

14. Can I bring my boombox, computer, and television?

Mostly for security reasons, these are discouraged. Computers will be available for your use should you need them. In addition, each dorm has lounges for television viewing. Since the program is so intense and busy, you realistically won't have the time to use these anyway.

15. What about card games and/or tournaments at Boys State?

Due to the nature, intensity, and uniqueness of the Boys State program, the playing of any card games is strictly prohibited. Boys State is an intense once in a lifetime experience. Leave your cards at home.
