WELCOME TO BOYS STATE LIVE 2011!
Return to Boys State Website
Wednesday Afternoon Update
The slate for the State General Election is set. The candidates know who they are, continue to campaign as much as they can, and their campaign committees are doing the same. Tonight WILL change some of their lives, as they speak to the entire state, counseling staff, and administrators of Boys State. The governor candidates will partake in their one and only public debate. All candidates know that scholarship implications are at stake.
Meanwhile, the inter-county sports program has concluded its regular season. The top team in each wing will play each other tomorrow for the state championship.
The Freedom Express has arrived. The 45 foot mobile museum tells the story of the First Amendment. The McCormick Foundation provides the opportunity to 480 of our citizens to receive a tour of this very unique mobile museum.
The Public Affairs competition has ended, and the winners will be announced at the assembly before the citizens take over and run the rest of the assembly.
Finally, the state police, band, State Senate, House of Representatives and Boys State-ment staff continued their work for the week.

To begin with, Boys State was something I had never heard of. When I was selected to represent the American Legion for Mendota, I didn’t know what to expect. My true thoughts were that it was something that involved genius like people. I realized I was wrong and fit in perfectly with everyone. Many guys are athletes just like me. Boys State has not only taught me I can become someone as a politician, but that I can fit in with other people no matter what their background is. Truthfully, I am a shy person, but the people around me have changed that. I can be a talkative person around them just like we’ve been friends for years. The counselors and everyone around me in Stelle County and even the whole staff of Boys State have made me a better person inside and out.  The slogan of Boys State “this one week can change a lifetime” is the truth. I, like many others here, have found we can do things we have never thought we could. I was elected many offices, though I came in not planning to run for office I knew that this was one time out of my life I’ll never get back. I ended up losing in the federalist primary for Attorney General by 14 votes. Regardless, what happened we all come out as winners knowing we are the only ones from our class to attend Boys State. As a result of Boys State, I am a changed person, someone who can be a leader and try to achieve goals. The memories will move on generation to generation here, I am proud to be one and could not have asked for a better experience.
