Monday Update

Flag Raising
Boy does 6:15 AM come early. That's right all throughout the camp citizens were waking up early this morning to attend the first flag raising ceremony. Tired eyes and sleepy young men assembled on the quadrangle at 7:00 AM to start the beginning of their 3rd day at Boys State. And what a full day it will be.
City Councils will be meeting for the first time today to decide what laws will be governing their cities. State Central Committees will begin the discussions on party platforms and how their conventions should be run later in the week. Oh and don't forget campaign speeches, how can we forget those. We have an election coming up this afternoon. County office nominees are giving campaign speeches at the County Meetings to try and win some votes.....

Government in Action
Meetings are going on all over camp and things are taking off like the heat of election season is here. City Councils have held their first official meetings and the first laws have been made. City Clerks have been trained in how to take proper minutes and will be submitting their records daily for review.
Public Affairs teams have met this afternoon to begin their review of the proposed amendment. Over the next few days these teams will be reviewing the amendment and creating a presentation with the teams stance on the issue. Public hearings on the issue will be Wednesday afternoon.

The House of Representatives also gaveled to order today and held their opening elections. After lengthy campaigning the Representatives voted on their leadership. The results of that vote are:

A slight power outage caused a delay in this evenings activities. Nothing that couldn't be overcome. After being delayed about and hour and a half we were still treated to a fantastic band concert by the Boys State Band. After hearing uplifting and crowd roaring songs out evening assembly began. The theme rang through with the sound of Leadership and Accomplishment from America's heartland, Illinois. We heard of ordinary people who had been called upon to do extraordinary things. Such as some of the citizens will be. What will tomorrow bring.

The first couple days of Boys State have been great. From county sporting events to city elections to just hanging out with newfound friends, I am beginning to shape my own identity as a citizen of this great country. Because of the experiences that I have gained here, I will be ready to embark upon my own journey of giving back to the country that has given so much to me.

Premier Illinois Boys State has been the experience of a lifetime!  There is so much to do and so little time.  We have many different things going on such as filling our town or county position, playing sports, on the oration team, or possibly even running for a State wide position.  Having the opportunity to attend a camp with hundreds of other people my age is really cool.  We all have many things in common talking about sports we play in high school, ACT scores we’ve gotten, and most definitely…the ladies.  In all seriousness, there’s no better place I would rather be this week then be running for State Governor here at Boys State.  Having the opportunity to meet all of these new people is amazing and it’s remarkable how many friends you can meet in one week.

So far this week at Boys State I have done many fun things. On our second day I ran for and was elected as City Supervisor I also learned a lot about Parliamentary Procedure and that Trey Stille, our City Mayor has a great singing voice. On Monday I ran for County Coroner promising that if brain eating zombies attacked, I could handle the situation professionally. The next day I started State Police School and got the election for County Coroner. So far I have really enjoyed being here I would recommend it to any one who wants to learn more about Government or likes marching a lot.
