Tuesday Update

Flag Raising
The nominating petitions are out and citizens and trying to get the required signatures needed to be able to get on the State Primary ballot. All petitions must be turned in 10:15 AM or the potential candidate will not make the ballot nor will the receive speaking time at the convention this evening. But wait there is more. Not only do you have to get your petition in on time you also have to attend a compulsory meeting at 1:00 PM in order for your name to appear on the ballot. Don't be late because the State Election Official is a stickler for the rules.
This morning also starts our seminar series. Citizens will attend one seminar each morning for the next four days. These seminar include Judicial Process, Executive Process, Electoral Process & Legislative Process. By the end of the series citizens should have a better understanding of the inner workings of our government structure.
The first edition of the Boys State-ment also came out today (see Daily Newspaper link above). Every day our citizen reporters meet to decide the content and then compile articles to fill the pages. Looks like the reporters have been hard at work.

Sports & Recreation.....
Recreation time is busy at Boys State. This afternoon citizens had the choice of participating organized team sports, State Police, Public Affairs, Essay and/or Oration preparation or participate in the House or Senate if so elected. This afternoon time allows for many different things to take place at camp. Often times you will campaign planning, lively discussion on current affairs but most important you see friendships being built.
In between these activities citizens also utilize the recreation center on campus. Activities range from cardio workouts to swimming to tennis. Not to mention that you can often find a game of frisbee being played on the quad.
Today the Table Tennis and Tennis Singles competitions were held. Winners of those were as follows:
Table Tennis - Alex Umholiz of Gleason County
Tennis Singles - Steven Hayworth of Keller County

Cavaliers, Speeches and Campaigns
Tonight Boys State citizens were treated to a public rehearsal and performance of the Rosemont Cavaliers. The Cavaliers have been on the campus of Eastern Illinois University this week preparing their new show. Before the Party Conventions all citizens were taken to the football stadium and seated to watch the 45 minute field show.
At the conclusion of the performance citizens were divided by their parties and sent to their respective conventions. At the conventions speeches were heard from party candidates as to why they should be chosen as the party nominee on the ballot. Speeches ranged in topic, theme and style delivery. Some speeches were even sung or rapped.
The Model County awards for the evening were as follows: East Wing, Keller - West Wing, Geiger - Overall - Savage

I've had a lot of fun at Illinois Boys State so far.  As I have gotten to know people and make more friends, I have come to realize that this trip will be even more of an enjoyable experience for the next five days.  The elections were at first confusing and boring, but now they're more enjoyable.  The sports activities are the highlights of my adventure here at Boys State; for example, I play soccer and ping pong.  I'm learning to come out of my shell, to be active, and also to communicate well with others.  My stay at Illinois Boys State is going to be a week that I will never forget and that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

First off, let me say that I had no idea what to expect coming to Illinois Boys State here at EIU. Honestly, I never really actually learned anything about what Boys State was about before I got here. The experience has been extremely interesting so far. I have had a lot of fun and have enjoyed running for positions in both my Boys State City of Gazza and Gleason County. It is very unique to be here and experience what life is like living on a college campus. I can know already that this will be a week I remember for a very long time.

Coming to Premier Boys State, I didn’t know what to expect. It was strange at first, people you didn’t know, with very different backgrounds, it was even intimidating. As the time passed, Boys State became a highlight of my summer. The people you meet here are amazing. I hope that I keep in touch with these guys, because these are some of the best friends I have ever encountered. I learned so much and just from the program, but from my friends as well. Boys State is very unique, and is something that I will remember forever.
